14 Unexpected flame
What the control is telling you
Flame sensed when the gas valve should be closed. 802P/R95P: amber flame LED blinks rapidly; 1-hour lockout (14 and 10 alternate) that starts once flame is gone. RGPE/RGLE: thermostat also shows Call For Service / CHECK FURNACE.
Applies to: 802P/80MDP (802PA050-150); R95P (R95PA040-115); RGPE/RGLE 2-stage 80+
Likely causes
- Gas valve leaking through or stuck open
- Gas valve relay on IFC stuck closed
- Voltage fed to the gas valve by miswiring
- Heat call (W) not fully removed
Test and repair steps
- Warning: If flame or gas will not shut off, close the manual gas valve to the appliance BEFORE shutting off electrical power.
- Remove the heat call and confirm W to C = 0 V at the IFC.
- Check for voltage at the gas valve with no call; if present, check wiring and the IFC gas valve relay (replace IFC if stuck).
- If no voltage but flame remains, replace the gas valve.
- Do not reset until the cause is found.
