EEL Igniter relay / igniter circuit fault

High severity Goodman/Amana GM9S96/AM9S96Goodman/Amana GM9S80/AM9S80Goodman/Amana GM9C96/AM9C96

What the control is telling you

The control detected a problem in the igniter circuit: wiring, a shorted or improperly connected igniter, poor ground, or a failed igniter relay on the board.

Applies to: Goodman/Amana/GMC gas furnaces, 9-speed ECM, 7-segment control. Two-stage 96%: AC9C96, AM9C96, GC9C96, GM9C96. Single stage 80%: VC9S80, VM9S80, AC9S80, AM9S80, GC9S80, GM9S80. Single stage 92/96%: VC9S96, VM9S96, AC9S96, AM9S96, AM9S92, GC9S96, GM9S96, GM9S92

Likely causes

  • Wiring problem between control and igniter
  • Shorted or improperly connected igniter
  • Poor unit ground
  • Igniter relay fault on the integrated control

Test and repair steps

  1. Check and correct the wiring and plug between the integrated control and the igniter.
  2. Ohm the igniter at room temperature (37-68 ohms silicon nitride; 30-300 ohms carbide mini igniter on 80% models); replace a shorted igniter.
  3. Verify the unit ground wire runs back to the panel and the ground connection is tight.
  4. During igniter warm-up, check for 115 VAC output at the control's igniter terminals; no output with a good igniter and wiring = replace the control board.

Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
