E8 System lockout - too many flame dropouts
What the control is telling you
Flame was established but was lost too many times during the call for heat, so the control locked out. Focus on flame sensing, gas pressure and grounding.
Applies to: Midea BGH96M 96% AFUE two-stage gas furnaces (060B3A, 080B3A, 080C4A, 100C5A, 100D5A, 120D5A)
Likely causes
- Dirty or broken flame sensor
- Flame not reaching the sensor
- Poor ground (green wire)
- Low or unstable gas pressure
- Partially blocked orifices
- Faulty control board
Test and repair steps
- Warning: Gas appliance - check for gas leaks with soap solution only, never an open flame.
- Make sure the gas valve switch is in the ON position.
- Check for loose or wrong wiring at the ignitor, gas valve and flame sensor; correct per the wiring diagram.
- Check inlet gas pressure natural gas 4.5-10.5 in. WC, propane 11.0-13.0 in. WC. Correct the supply if out of range.
- Watch the ignitor during the 17 s preheat: it should glow red/orange. If not, check for 115 VAC between IG and IGN during preheat (no voltage = board problem) and measure the ignitor at 9-17 ohms (out of range = replace ignitor).
- If the ignitor glows but no flame, check for 18-31 VAC between M/HI and C at the gas valve; no signal = replace the control board.
- Check manifold pressure 3.5 in. WC natural gas, 10 in. WC propane. Adjust the valve; replace the gas valve if it cannot be adjusted. Check burner orifices for blockage.
- If flame lights then drops out confirm flame reaches the sensor, clean the sensor with steel wool or replace it, and confirm flame signal is 1-6 microamps.
- Check the green ground wire is properly connected; poor ground causes flame-sense failure.
- Reset the lockout (power off 1-20 s or remove thermostat call 1-20 s). If faults continue with all checks good, replace the control board.
