22 Abnormal flame-proving signal

Critical severity 59TP6A58SB0A/58SB1A

What the control is telling you

Flame is sensed while the gas valve is supposed to be off. The inducer keeps running (high speed) until the fault clears.

Applies to: 59TP6A two-stage variable-speed ECM multipoise condensing gas furnace, all sizes (040-10 to 120-22)

Likely causes

  • Gas valve stuck open or leaking through

Test and repair steps

  1. Warning: Flame with the valve de-energized means gas may be flowing; shut off gas at the manual valve immediately.
  2. Warning: Shut off 115-V power and gas, and lock/tag out before working inside the furnace; there may be more than one power source.
  3. Check if burners stay lit after the heat call ends.
  4. Replace the gas valve if it is stuck open or leaky.
  5. Leak-check gas connections and confirm the flame goes out at the end of the cycle.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
